Why a ceiling stain in a DeSoto house can sit away from the leak
A ceiling stain after rain raises a practical question: where did the water enter? The opening may be above the mark, or water may have travelled along roofing layers or framing first. The room and timing give the inspection a starting point without identifying the cause on their own.

Water travels before it drips
A roof is built to move water down and off. Once water gets past the covering, the rules change. It runs along the underside of the decking, follows a rafter or a truss chord, and drops where gravity and the framing let it, sometimes several feet down-slope from the opening. On the older DeSoto houses with plank decking instead of plywood, the gaps between boards give it even more places to travel.
So a small mark on a hallway ceiling can come from a pipe boot over the bathroom, and a stain in a bedroom corner can come from a wall flashing two rooms over. The size of the stain says nothing about the size of the repair.

A pipe, a chimney, a wall or a change of slope interrupts the field of shingles, and flashing carries the water past the interruption. When a rubber boot splits in the sun or step flashing pulls away from a wall, rain has a gap while the shingles on either side look perfectly ordinary.
That is why the roof layout is the first clue. A valley above the room, a room addition tied into the original roof, a nearby wall or chimney: those are where a roofer starts, before the spot directly over the stain.
After a DeSoto storm, the date matters
Tell the roofer whether the stain followed repeated rain or one event, and keep the date. The storm history archive can help look up nearby reports, but it cannot diagnose the roof. Wind direction and remembered hail are clues to consider alongside the physical condition, not a rule that one weather type always points to flashing and another to shingles.
A dry week does not erase the question. Water marks on the decking, rust on a nail, a boot that has gone hard: the evidence is still up there once the rain stops.
The fix is at the entry point, not the ceiling
Take photos from inside or from the yard if it is easy, keep clear of a sagging ceiling and water near light fixtures, and leave the roof to the roofer.
Once the entry point is found, roof leak repair replaces the failed detail and laps it into the shingles around it. Repainting the ceiling comes last, after the water has stopped.
